Comets Run Hard & Fast As They Sprint Past Concordia, 85-70, in ASC First Round

RICHARDSON, TX (02.25.11) - It was fast and furious from start to finish and exactly what the UT Dallas men's basketball team expected as the Comets outlasted Concordia-Texas,  85-70, in the first round of the American Southwest Conference Tournament, held at the UTD Activity Center.

The Comets (now 21-5), riding a 10-game winning streak, advanced the conference tournament semifinals for the third straight year and will face West Division runner-up Mary Hardin-Baylor at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in rematch of last year's title game. In that contest, the Cru defeated UTD, 80-70, in Belton.

Senior Curtis Davis led five Comets in double figures as he scored a game-high 21 points. Davis was an impressive 9-of-11 from the field, all from inside the arc, and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the foul line. Four of the five starters finished in double figures as senior Brandon Greene had 17 points and junior Greg Chiasson and freshman Kyle Schleigh each added 13 points. Freshman Dmitriy Chernikov came off the bench to contribute 10 points. Greene led the Comets with a game-best eight reboudns while Chiasson dished out six assists.

The two teams combined for 121 shots on the night with the Comets shooting 57.1 percent from the field. UTD was 28-of-49 from the floor, connecting on 6-of-10 shots (60%) from three-point range, and was 23-of-32 (71.9%) from the charity stripe as Concordia ended teh night with 30 fouls.

The Comets stormed out early, grabbing a double-digit lead, 26-15, with 9:23 left in the first half when junior Chris Barnes made a layup to cap a 9-2 run for UTD. The Comets widened their first-half lead to as many as 16 points as UTD shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the field in the opening period. The Comets led at the break, 44-30.

It took little for UTD to extend its advantage to 20 points as Schleigh converted a pair of free throws with 16:35 left to give the Comets a 56-36 lead. The Comets shot 63.6 percent (14-of-22) from the field in the second half, making 3-of-5 treys, as they held off any attempt of a comeback from the visiting Tornados.

Concordia (now 15-11) got 14 points off the bench from Chris McOmber as he led four Tornados in double figures. Three other bench players - Darius Anderson, Josh Johnson and Chris McDermott - each added 10 points as the CTX starting lineup accounted for just 21 points. The Tornados finished the game 25-of-72 (34.7%) from the field, making 31.6 percent (6-of-19) of their three-point attempts, and made 14-of-18 shots (77.8%) from the foul line. CTX entered the game ranked second in NCAA Division III in scoring, averaging better than 93 points per game. The 70 points was the second-lowest output in a game this season by the Tornados.
