TUNICA, MS (09.19.11) - The UT Dallas men's golf team returned to the course over the weekend to compete in the Rhodes College Men's Fall Classic at the Tunica National Golf Club.
The Comets finished in the 13th place out of the 21 NCAA Division III teams competing in the two-day event. UTD finished with a total of 619 (315-304) through 36 holes. UTD's final round of 304 was the eighth-best round recorded on Monday.
Freshmen
Johnny Begzos and
Dylan Carroll both paced the Comets, carding two-day totals of 155. Begzos shot an 81 to open Sunday and finished with a 74 Monday, the lowest round by a Comet in the event. Carroll shot a 77 to lead the Comets in round one and shot a 78 in Monday's final round. The duo tied for 47th out of the 105 golfers competing. Keaton Kelly finished in a tie for 60th with a 157 (80-77),
Joey Kron was tied for 70th at 159 (77-82) and
Mark Kreml finished at 78th at 160 (85-75).
"We are a young team and two of the three freshmen it was their first collegiate tourney and they all posted the best rounds," said head coach
Eddie Bull. "After we got over a case of nerves, they showed great poise and character. Our two upper classmen helped the freshmen cope and play better and we did on Monday."
Texas-Tyler won the team title after shooting a 581 (292-289) over the two rounds. Centre College and Huntingdon College tied for second at 597 while Transylvania was fourth at 600.
The Comets return to action Oct. 3-4 at the Al Jones Memorial Tournament, hosted by Texas-Tyler at the Cascades Country Club in Tyler.
