Box Score ABILENE, TX (11.02.12) - The 2012 season for the UT Dallas women's soccer came to a conclusion Friday afternoon as the Comets fell to nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons, 2-0, in the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Tournament.
TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
The Comets (now 11-5-2) wrapped up yet another successful campaign, advancing to the ASC Tournament for the 11th consecutive season (13th overall) and making an appearance in the league semifinals for the 12th time in the program's 15 years in the league.
Hardin-Simmons (now 16-0-1 and ranked No. 2 in the latest national NCAA Division III poll) got a goal in each half despite a Comet defense that continually thwarted advances. HSU finally cracked through with a long-range scoring shot from Kati McCarty in the 15th minute, hitting a high hard line drive off a Devon Howard pass from just outside the right corner of the box. The Comets held their own the rest of the half, but could manage just one shot - none on goal. Meanwhile, the UTD defense kept the ball away from UTD goalkeeper
Brittany Best, who had to make just one save before intermission.
In the second half, the Comets went on the offensive, matching the Cowgirls in shots, 6-6. The biggest differential was in corner kicks, and it eventually cost UTD. HSU was awarded six corner opportunities in the second period and Courtney Cramer finally converted for HSU off a Katie Kuykendall service in the 29th minute to put the game out of reach.
UT Dallas held the high-powered Cowgirl offense to just 14 shots on the afternoon, with only six on goal, while the Comets finished with seven shots, four on goal. UTD starting goalkeeper
Brittany Best made one save in the first half while
Macaire Ament made three saves in the final 45 minutes.
Jamie Rheman, who spearheaded UTD's defensive efforts on the back line, led the Comets with two shots.
Seniors
Emily Hokanson and
Taylor Maeker were named to the All-Tournament team.
HSU, which has won 10 straight ASC titles, will now meet the winner of a Mississippi College/UT Tyler semifinal in the tournament's championship game at 1 pm Sunday.
