Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (12.09.12) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team shot 57 percent from the field and scored a season-high as the Comets cruised to an 82-62 home win over Schreiner Sunday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (now 6-1, 3-1 ASC) got a third "double-double" in four games from Kyle Scheigh as the junior ended the game 20 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and two steals one of the best all-around games by a UTD player this season. Schleigh was 6-for-12 from the field, hitting 2-of-5 three-pointers, and was 6-for-9 from the free-throw line, most of which coming down the stretch.
Carter Nash added 19 points, taking advantage of 9-of-11 accuracy from the foul line, while
Reese Dahse pitched in 10 points to round out the Comets in double figures.
UTD rolled out to an early lead as the Comets never looked back in the wire-to-wire victory over the Mountaineers.
Mitchell Anderson capped the quick start by the Comets by draining a three-pointer with 15:35 left in the opening half to lift UTD to an early 10-3 lead. Schreiner drew within two points over the next several minutes, but the UTD kept the Mountaineers at bay, finally grabbing a double-digit lead, 22-11, with 6:17 left before the break on a Nash layup. The Comets ended the half with a 12-4 run to grab a 37-21 cushion at the break.
It took just over a minute into the second half for UTD to extend its lead to 20 points as Schleigh scored on a fast-break after a steal by teammate
Nolan Harvey to lift the Comets to a 41-21 advantage with 18:50 to play. UTD would not lead by fewer than 14 points for the remainder of the contest as the Comets shot 56 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes to secure the 20-point win.
The Comets hit 24-of-42 shots (57.1%) from the field, connecting on 7-of-16 three-pointers (43.8%), and were 27-of-34 (79.4%) from the free-throw line. UTD held a slim, 33-31, advantage in rebounding.
For Schreiner (now 6-1, 3-1 ASC), Ethan Catalani finished the game with a team-best 11 points off the bench as 14 different Mountaineers scored. The Mountaineers shot just 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the field, hitting just 3-of-15 three-pointers (20%), and hit 17-of-28 free-throws (60.7%) from the free-throw line.
The Comets hit the road Thursday for meeting with Mary Hardin-Baylor. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Belton.
