UTD 6, Hardin-Simmons 3
UTD kicked off a busy weekend as the Comets scored three runs in the bottom of the 6th to earn a 6-3 win over Hardin-Simmons, at the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament at Oran Good Park.
After scoring three early runs on Hardin-Simmons errors, the Comets (now 2-0-1) found themselves tied with HSU after a three-run 5th by the Cowgirls. However, UTD responded with three runs on four hits in the 6th to remain unbeaten on the season.
Morgan Anderson used a one-out triple down the right field line to start the Comet barrage in the 6th inning. She quickly came home on a
Jordan Bratcher single up the middle to break the 3-3 tie. Bratcher then came homeward on a
Hannah Creech double to the leftfield gap. Three batters later, Creech scored the final run on a bases-loaded infield single by
Rachel Riley.
Jessie Richardson (1-0) picked up her first win as a Comet as she scattered six and giving up three earned runs. Richardson struck out two and walked one. Riley ended the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Creech and Bratcher each had RBI hits.
Concordia 3, UTD 2
The Comets fell behind early, giving up three runs in the 3rd, and could not muster enough offense to overcome a solid performance by the CTX pitching staff.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the 3rd, UTD got its first two hits game in the frame. With one out and a runner on first,
Hannah Creech used a single through the left side of the Tornado infield to give the Comets runners on 1st and 2nd. After a groundout by
Stephanie Harris, advancing both runners,
Brittanie Knowles plated both runs with a single to left. The Comets had chances late in the game to knot the score, putting the tying run on second base in each of the final three innings, but to no avail.
Jeni Olbeter (1-1) was handed the loss, giving up three earned runs on five hits in a complete-game performance. Olbeter struck out CTX batter and walked two.
UTD 9, Texas Lutheran 3
The Comets plated nine runs on 15 hits as they turned a 3-1 deficit into a 9-3 win over Texas Lutheran to open the second day of play.
After giving up two early runs in the bottom of the 1st, UTD got on the scoreboard in the 2nd when the Comets got a pair of triples from Riley and
Megan Aragones. TLU then added another run to pull ahead 3-1 after three frames.
Avery McHugh then opened the Comets' half of the 4th with her second home run of the season to draw UTD within a run, 3-2. That long ball would spark a six-run frame by the Comets and they never looked back.
After back-to-back singles by Riley and
Jonelle Feikis, Aragones gave UTD runners on second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Anderson then plated both Comet base runners with a single through the left side of the Bulldog infield. Then, after two infield singles to load the bases,
Stephanie Harris added to the Comets' lead with an infield single, scoring Anderson. Knowles added a fielder's choice groundout RBI before McHugh ended the scoring with an RBI single.
Richardson tossed the first 3.2 innings of the game, giving up three runs on three hits. She struck out one TLU batter and issued four walks. Olbeter (2-1) took over with two outs in the 4th and dominated the rest of the game, giving up just one hit with three strikeouts over the final 3.1 innings. McHugh finished 3-for-4 with three RBI while Creech, Harris, Riley and Bratcher each had multi-hit games.
UTD 11, Sul Ross State 1 (5 inning)
The Comets collected just seven hits but took advantage of five Sul Ross State errors in an 11-1, five-inning win over the Lady Lobos to close out the ASC First Pitch Tournament.
UTD exploded for five runs in the top of the 1st, added four more in the 2nd and two final runs in the 4th before giving up SRSU's lone run in the bottom of the 5th.
The Comets opened the game with a double from Creech to spark a five-run 1st inning. Creech later scored on a Knowles single to left for the first run of the game. UTD added two RBIs from Aragones on a double and an RBI groundout by
Jordan Bratcher in the frame. The Comets scored their other run on one of two SRSU errors in the inning.
In the 2nd, Knowles started things off with an RBI single to center, scoring Creech. Feikis then plated McHugh with a single and
Taylor Ervin found home on the same play after a Lady Lobo error. UTD added another run on a SRSU error later in the frame, when Feikis scored on a ground ball hit by
Chelsea Sartor that was misplayed by the Lady Lobo second baseman.
Leading 9-0 in the 4th, the Comets extended their lead to 10 runs with one out when SRSU was unable to get Ervin out a home on a Sartor ground ball.
Robin Thomas later plated Aragones with a ground out to end the scoring.
Aragones (1-0) picked up their first win of the season, giving up one unearned run on three hits in a complete game. She struck out one Lady Lobo while issuing three walks. Knowles was 3-for-4 with two RBI as the only Comet to record a multi-hit game.
