Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (09.28.13) - In a match marked by two lengthy rain delays and nearly five hours elapsed from the opening whistle to the final buzzer, the nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons University Cowgirls poured on the offensive power to topple UT Dallas, 5-1, Saturday afternoon.
The 12th-ranked Cowgirls (6-1-0, 2-0-0 ASC) scored three times in a four-minute span midway through the second half, then added another goal for good measure with :02 remaining to overcome an early 1-0 UTD (3-7-0, 1-1 ASC) lead. HSU had tied the score at 1-1, finally getting on the scoreboard with :50 left in the first half.
Despite being outshot, 15-4, in a first half that included a 2:45 rain delay, the Comets actually shocked the Cowgirls with the first goal of the game. UTD took advantage of a corner kick opportunity at 15:01 and
Carli Beckett found
Sarah Borg for a header into the net.
UTD ended up on the short end of a 30-4 shot total, putting just one other shot on goal. HSU forced Comet goalkeeper into nine save situations.
HSU got goals from five different players, but Taylor Thigpen had the game-winner, then assisted on the next two goals for HSU.
The Comets will try to get back on the winning track next Saturday when they host East Texas Baptist University at 5 pm.
