IRVING, TX (03.18.14) - Junior Jessie Richardson tossed a five-inning no-hitter - and an almost perfect game - Tuesday night, leading the Comets to a doubleheader sweep over The University of Dallas. The Comets blanked the Crusaders, 11-0, in a "run-rule" shortened nightcap after rallying to win the first game, 6-5.

Richardson, a junior from Cleburne, faced the minimum 15 batters to become just the fourth UTD pitcher in program history to record a no-hitter and the first since Jeni Olbeter stopped Ozarks in five innings almost four years ago (March 23, 2010). Dallas did have a runner reach first on a third strike passed ball in the fourth inning, but she was quickly erased trying to take second base on the play.

Richardson struck out just two batters, but let her defense do the work, coaxing 10 routine ground balls from the 15 hitters she faced and fly balls from the other three.

With the sweep, UTD improved to 10-8 on the season while the Crusaders fell to 8-13. The two teams will meet again at UTD on April 1.

The Comets return to American Southwest Conference play this Friday and Saturday when they host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, beginning Friday night at 5 pm.

GAME 1: UTD 6, DALLAS 5

After spotting the University of Dallas three early runs, the UT Dallas softball team rallied for a 6-5 win in the first game of a Tuesday non-conference doubleheader.

Trailing 3-0 after two innings, the Comets (now 9-8) finally got on the board with a pair of runs in in the third frame thanks to a Crusader error and a bases-loaded RBI infield single by Taylor Nabors.

UTD knotted the game, 3-3, in the fifth with a two-out double to left-center field by Jessica Ramos, scoring Avery McHugh from second base. The Comets finally took the lead with a run in the sixth and tried to pull away with two insurance runs in the seventh.

In the sixth, Taylor Ervin led off for the Comets with an infield single, advanced to second on a foul out by Jordan Bratcher and then then stole third base, putting the go-ahead run just 60 feet away. Ervin then beat the throw home on a ground ball by Kendall Moore.

The Comets added to their lead in the seventh, scoring a run on a bases-loaded hit batter (Bratcher) and a bases-loaded UD error on a ground ball by Morgan Anderson. The Crusaders did, however, score two runs in the bottom of the frame, and had the winning run on first base before Lauren McLeod recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

McLeod (5-1) picked up the win in relief of starter Megan Aragones, going 5.1 innings, giving up one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts. Aragones gave up two earned runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work. Ervin was 2-for-2 with a run scored while Jonelle Feikis finished 2-for-4 and McHugh was 2-for-5.

GAME 2: UTD 11, DALLAS 0

Taylor Ervin
Richardson found her way into the record books with the no-hitter, and the UTD hitters found their offensive touch, knocking out 12 base hits in just five innings of work. Ervin continued her heroics with a 3-RBI double in the third inning and three other Comets collected at least two hits.

The Comets got the only runs they would need in the top of the second. A single, walk and fielders choice loaded the bases to open the inning, but a strikeout and infield fly popup almost got the Crusaders out of the jam. But Ervin delivered a bases-clearing 3-RBI double to left center to post UTD to a 3-0 advantage early.

After two more three-up, three-down frames from Richardson, UTD put together a three-hit, three-run inning in the fourth. A two-out error on the Crusader right fielder allowed Chelsea Sartor and Margeaux Petrash to score, and Avery McHugh followed with an RBI double to left center to score Aragones and build the lead to 6-0.

Sophomore catcher Ally Hudec then set the tempo for a five-run outburst in the fifth with a leadoff home run over the left center wall. Five hits and two more outfield errors later, the Comets had pushed the lead to 11-0, well beyond the eight-run cushion required for a "run rule" win. Bratcher followed Hudec's blast with a triple to almost the same part of the field, and then Sara Navarro brought home Bratcher. Back-to-back dropped fly balls by the UD outfield scored Navarro and Petrash, then a Sartor double scored Ervin with the final run. All five runs scored in the inning before the first out was recorded.
