CARLI BECKETT SCORED HER ASC-LEADING
FIFTH GOAL AND ADDED TWO ASSISTS.
The Comets (now 4-0) scored twice before the break and added three season-half goals as they posted their fourth straight shutout to open the new year. UTD collected 25 shots on the night, 16 of which were on goal, while limiting the visiting Pirates (now 0-5-1) to just two shots.

UTD opened the scoring in the 8th minute on a putback by Alissa Burch, her second of the year, after back-to-back close-range shots by Andrea Guevara and Carli Beckett. Beckett then tallied her ASC-leading fifth goal of the season in the 18th minute on a turnaround from 15 yards out after a pass from Burch.

In the 48th minute, Samantha Huston lifted the Comets to a 3-0 advantage with her third goal of the season, an unassisted tallied after stealing the ball from a Southwestern defender. Megan Mugavero added a goal in the 63rd minute, her second of the season, after receiving a pass from Beckett and drilling the ball past Pirate back-up keeper Kylie Hunt. Sofia Quezada later scored her first goal of the year off an Eliza Carey corner kick in the 82nd minute.

Junior goalkeeper Macaire Ament collected two saves, one in each half, as she played the first 64-plus minutes before giving way for sophomore keeper Kristi Istre for the final 25:31 of the contest. Istre did not face any Pirate shots. Beckett and Sarah Borg each finished with a team-best four shots while Guevara, Huston and Carey all collected three shots. The Comets took 11 corner kicks in the contest, compared to just two by Southwestern.

The Comets continue their short two-game home stand Sunday afternoon as they host No. 2-ranked Trinity. Game time is 1 p.m. at the UTD Soccer Field
