Box Score MARSHALL, Texas (01.21.16) - In a game fitting of a showdown for the American Southwest Conference East Division lead, East Texas Baptist edged the UT Dallas men's basketball team Thursday night, 61-57.
The Tigers (12-4, 5-2 ASC) put together a 10-0 run midway through the second half and were able to hold off the Comets (11-4, 5-3) in a game that featured nine ties and 10 lead changes. The win moved ETBU one-half game ahead of the Comets in the divisional race.
UTD last led the game 38-37 with 16:02 remaining on a
Caleb Banks layup, but ETBU followed with 10 unanswered points over the next 5:21 and had a 47-38 lead with 9:39 left. The Comets responded with an 8-0 run of their own to cut the lead down to 47-46 with 7:33 to go, but the Tigers pulled back out front late and sank free throws down the stretch to ice the win. UTD was within a point (52-51) for the last time on a
Chase Davis three-pointer with 4:36 left.
Reagan Keogh, who led the Comets with 18 points and seven rebounds, pulled UTD within two points with :05 remaining with a layup and foul shot, but UTD was not able to regain the ball.
ETBU held a slight 32-30 lead at halftime.
In addition to Keogh, Davis came off the bench to finish in double figures with 11 points, while Banks pitched in nine.
UTD shot just 39.7 percent (23-58) for the game, but held ETBU to just 42.9 percent (21-49). ETBU hit seven three-pointers in comparison to five for the Comets. The biggest different came at the free-throw line, where UTD hit just 6-of-11 shots while the Tigers went 12-of-15. UTD won the rebounding battle, 34-30.
UTD has little time to rest, traveling to Louisiana College for a Saturday afternoon tilt.
