The Comets, under first-year head coach
Butch Edge, boasted a 3.75 team grade point average during the 2015-16 academic year, finishing as just one of six NCAA D-III men's program's to report a team GPA 3.5 or higher.Â
"I am honored to be associated with these young men," said Coach Edge. "We always talk about being special in the classroom and on the golf course. From day one, that bought into my vison for UTD Golf. We play with honor, passion and make a difference in the classroom and on the course."
For the second straight season, NAIA-institution Embry-Riddle Prescott posted the highest overall team GPA for all divisions with a 3.787. Other Academic National Champions for 2016-17 were Valparaiso (NCAA D-I), USC Aiken (NCAA D-III), Garden City (NJCAA D-I) and Meredian (NJCAA D-II). A total of 41 teams received President's Special Recognition status for having team GPAs of 3.5 or better. The 41 teams to earn this distinction are the most since the Academic Team Awards program began in 2009. A record 208 teams submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher to earn All-Academic Team recognition.
UTD was the lone member of the American Southwest Conference recognized by the GCAA as either President's Special Recognition or All-Academic Team.
