No. 10 Comets Fall at Belhaven, 5-3, in 10 Innings to Open Weekend

Box Score JACKSON, MS (04.07.17) - The No. 10-ranked UT Dallas baseball team suffered its third walk-off loss of the season Friday afternoon after a 5-3 defeat at Belhaven to open a three-game American Southwest Conference weekend series.

The Comets (20-7, 9-4 ASC) will look to bounce back Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the host Blazers at Smith-Willis Stadium.

UTD opened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the 1st inning, but the Blazers and answered with two scores in the 2nd to even the game, 2-2. The Comets regained the lead with a single run in the 5th, but BU again responded with a run in the 6th to knot the game, 3-3. The game would end with no outs in the bottom of the 10th on a walk-off two-run homer by Blazer Will Costinett.

Josh Covey opened the game with a single to right and quickly advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. After advancing to third on the second Blazer error of the inning, Covey would score the first run of the game on a fielder's choice by Connor Scruggs. The Comets would later double their lead in the 1st with an RBI double by Mitch Barati, plating Scruggs. In the 5th, UTD took a 3-2 lead on an RBI triple by Barry Casey, scoring Michael Morton from first base.

After tying the game in the 6th, the Blazers got the potential game-winning run to third base, but UTD's defense keep the game tied. In the 9th, BU opened the frame with a walk and the Comets made three strong defensive players, two by Scurggs and the third by Isaiah Swann, to keep the home team off the board and force extra innings.

Jamie Andriot did not factor in the decision for his first time in ASC play this season as he tossed 8.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Tristin DerMargosian tossed a scoreless 9th before Brandon Koncaba (1-2) gave up two hits in the 10th. Covey and Barati each finished 2-for-5 as the only Comets with multi-hit games.
