Shannon Mathis Named ASC Community Service Athlete of the Year

RICHARDSON, TX (06.18.19) - UT Dallas senior women's basketball player Shannon Mathis has been named the American Southwest Conference Community Service Female Athlete of the Year, announced Tuesday by the league office.

A native of San Marcos, Mathis becomes the second-ever Comet to earn the honor from the ASC, joining former UTD softball player Chelsea Sartor, who claimed the award for the 2014-15 academic year.

"Shannon is well deserved of this award," stated UT Dallas Director of Athletics Bill Petitt. "She took the lead on several community service projects with the women's basketball team and also amassed over 72 hours individually working with several community service projects. She was dedicated to making a difference."

Mathis was crucial to the Comet women's basketball team amassing over 600 hours of community service during the 2018-19 academic year. The four-year Comet helped coordinate several team and individual community service opportunities during her final season with the UTD women's teams. Alone, Mathis tallied 72 hours of community service during the year, working with Watermark Urgent Cark, Starting Blocks Preschool Ministry, Feeding Children Everywhere, Concert for a Cure and various on-campus initiatives. Mathis worked the front desk at Watermark Urgent Care in Plano on multiple occasions and would work with the Watermark Community Church in the preschool ministry through the year.

Along with her teammates, she assisted in packing over 10,000 meals for Dallas ISD students through the Feeding Children Everywhere program. On campus, Mathis and her team assisted with Trunk or Treat, UTD's annual community event for Halloween, and helped coordinate the Northside Block Party, an annual event during UTD's Weeks of Welcome, welcoming new students onto campus.
