DENTON, TX (04.05.22) - In the squad's final warm-up before the ASC Championships later this month, the No. 12-ranked UT Dallas men's golf team recorded an eighth place finish at the DBU Men's Classic, hosted by Dallas Baptist at the Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch.
Playing against a field consisted primarily of NCAA D-II programs, the Comets held their own with two of the top rounds in program history Monday to enter Tuesday's final round in eighth place. UTD fired identical rounds of 289 on Monday for a 36-hole total of 578 and closed the event Tuesday with a third-round total of 293 to finish the 54-hole event at 871, matching the second-lowest 54-hole total in school history.
Freshman
Cade Eldridge led the Comets with a three-round total of even-par 216, placing 28th in the field of 69 golfers. Eldridge, who tied the eighth-lowest 54-hole individual total in UTD history, shot par 72 in Monday's opening round and followed up with a three-under 69 in the day's late round. On Tuesday, Eldridge carded a three-over 75 to close the event.
Jared Harvey and
Daniel Shofner each finished the tournament one shot behind Eldridge with a 54-hole total of 217, tying for 29th place. Harvey enter Tuesday's round at one-over 145 (72-73) and led the squad with another round of 72 on Tuesday. Shofner fired back-to-back rounds of 72 on Monday to sit at 144 after 36 holes and closed the event with a one-over 73 on Tuesday.
Davis Archer tied for 45th with a 54-hole at 222 (73-75-74) and
Ryan Kropp tied for 48th at 223 (73-76-74). Playing as individuals,
Jarrett Grinnel tied for 53rd at 228 (78-74-76) and
Tyler Reitano finished 63rd at 234 (79-74-81).
Texas A&M-Commerce claimed the team title with a 54-hole total of 826 (-38) while Cameron was a close second at 833 (-31). St. Mary's (850) finished third, Texas A&M International (855) fourth, host DBU (856) fifth, West Texas A&M (860) sixth and Texas-Tyler (863) seventh. Fellow ASC member, and other other NCAA D-III team in the field, East Texas Baptist finished ninth at 899 and Arkansas-Monticello was 10th at 901.
TAMUC's Kittiphong Phaithuncharoensuk claimed medalist honors at 18-under 198 (64-68-66) while TAMIU's Maurio Figuero placed second at 11-under 205 (71-65-69).
Monday's pair of team rounds of 289 tied for fourth-lowest rounds this season by the Comets and eighth-lowest rounds in program history. Eldridge's 36-hole total of 141 tied for 11th-lowest individual round in UTD men's golf history while his second-round 69 matched the 13th lowest round all-time.
The Comets return to action Apr. 29-May 1 for the ASC Championships, played at Nutcracker Golf Course in Granbury.
