ABILENE, Texas - The UT Dallas track & field teams opened the 2023 outdoor season at the HSU Invitational, where they combined to break 12 school records with the men finishing second and the women taking fourth place.
The Comet men won four events on the cold day at the HSU Track. They scored 118 points, finishing just behind the host Cowboys' 126 and finishing ahead of defending American Southwest Conference champion McMurry, who had 115.Â
Junior
Kameron Quinn took first in the 100 meters dash, breaking the school record in 10.95 seconds. Freshman
Chiemeka Ejikeme followed in sixth place in 11.32.Â
The 4x100 relay team of Quinn,
Rami Habbas, Ejikeme and
Raphael Park broke the school record in 43.29 seconds, finishing second.Â
Graduate student
Trent Sakakini won two events, taking first in the 800 in 1:57.58 and winning the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:53.43. Senior
Joseph Kirby also won the 10,000 meter run in 33:36.01.
The Comets took six of the top eight spots in the 5,000 meters, led by
Graeme Maclean's record-breaking 15:15.04. He was followed by
Christopher Castro,
Andy Hamze, Just Ardis and
Javion Zavala in second through fifth place.
John Youssef took eighth.
Freshman
Joseph Hussey established the Comet record with a high jump of 1.68 meters (5 ft.-6 in.), placing fifth. Sophomore
Lucas Wick finished eighth in the discus with a throw of 37.67 meters (123 ft.-7 in.), breaking the previous school record by 2.5 feet. He also established a shot put record of 11.14 meters (36 ft.-6.75 in.).
Muaaz Makda finished fourth in the 800 in 2:04.94.
Griffin Davis and
Gavin Thomas were fifth and sixth in the 1,500 meters with times of 4:18.69 and 4:19.32, respectively.Â
Luke Pearsona and
Jayden Chambless were third and fourth in the steeplechase. Sophomore
Dami Oyadiran was seventh with a long jump of 5.88 meters (19 ft.-3.5 in.).

The UTD women scored 44 points for a fourth place finish. Freshman
Tia Billingsly shattered the 100 meter dash school record by 1.26 seconds with a time of 13.76, placing sixth. Freshman
Aparna Amarneethi established a new Comet best in the 400 dash with a sixth place finish in 1:11.22.
Sophomore
Sage Herrera broke two records, breaking the 800 meter mark by nearly eight seconds in 2:30.87 and placing third. She was also third in the 1,500 meters in 5:12.93, breaking the previous record by 8.4 seconds.Â
Freshman
Hannah Edwards was third with a long jump of 4.49 meters (14 ft.-8.75 in.), establishing the Comet record. Mariana Gonzales was seventh in the event. Freshman
Chisom Mbah also set teh shot put record at 9.02 meters (29 ft.-7.25 in.). Edwards was also eighth in the javelin throw.
Freshman
Abby Valdez was second with a 5,000 meter time of 21:03.16. Sophomore
Rebeca Betanzo took seventh in the 800 in 2:35.12 and sixth with a 1,500 mark of 5:18.26.
UTD will be back in action on March 11 at the Oxy Distance Carnival & Spring Break Classic in Los Angeles.
