Three Individual Winners Highlight Comets in ASC Awards

RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas men's basketball team produced three individual award winners and had four student-athletes recognized on the All-American Southwest Conference Teams, the office announced Tuesday.

Graduate student guard Kyle Poerschke was the Newcomer of the Year and selected to the First Team, senior forward James Curtis was named the Newcomer of the Year and Terry Butterfield was the Coach of the Year.

Senior guard Hunter Stevens was on the Third Team and the All-Defensive Team. Sophomore guard Luke Kiser was an Honorable Mention and forward Austin Page was selected to the All-Freshman Team.

Poerschke, from Houston, ranked sixth in the ASC with 18.8 points per game, 11th in rebounds with 5.9 per contest and 10th with a 51.4 field goal percentage. He also recorded 47 assists, 39 steals and seven blocks while hitting 51 three-pointers. Poerschke tied the school record with 43 points in a game at LeTourneau on January 14. He is the fourth Newcomer of the Year for the Comets in program history.

Curtis, from Round Rock, Texas, averaged 6.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and had 59 assists, 23 steals and a pair of blocks. He also shot 41.2 percent (35-for-85) from three-point range. He is the first Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year for UTD men's basketball.

Butterfield earned his ninth ASC Coach of the Year award by guiding the Comets to a 20-6 record and a second place finish in the conference with a 15-3 record. The 20 wins in 2022-23 was the ninth time Butterfield has reached that plateau in 23 seasons with UTD.

Stevens, of Leander, Texas, ranked second in the league with a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ration and was fourth with 113 assists. A College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Selection, he averaged 9.0 points and 3.2 rebounds per game with 31 steals and two blocks. Stevens, who was on the Third Team last season, finished his career in fourth place on the Comet career assists list with 326.

Kiser, from Burnet, Texas, led the ASC with a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ration, was sixth with 110 assists and sixth with an 83.3 free throw percentage and ninth with 42 steals. He also averaged 7.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest. Kiser made the All-Freshman Team last season.

Page, of Frisco, Texas, shattered the UTD single-season field goal percentage record, shooting 72.2 percent (70-for-97). He averaged 7.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game and had 16 assists, five steals and three blocks. He also shot 70.7 percent at the free throw line.
