UTD Men's Golf Opens NCAA Championship Tuesday

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. - The #13/13 UT Dallas men's golf team will compete in its first NCAA Division III Championship in 20 years at Keene Trace Golf Club, starting Tuesday.

Last Monday, the NCAA released the 43 teams and six individual qualifiers for this year's tournament, in which the Comets were one of 34 automatic qualifiers for the event after winning the American Southwest Conference championship for the second time in program history in April. The tournament will be 72 holes with 18 teams and top six individuals continuing after 36 holes.

UTD finished 14th in its lone team appearance at the NCAA Championship in 2003.

In nine tournaments this season, the Comets have one win and four second place finishes. They won the ASC Championship by 15 strokes.

Andrew Chow was the individual medalist at the ASC Championship and earned First Team all-conference honors. He tied the school record for lowest single round and 54-hole score at the tournament, shooting a -6. He has a 75.10 scoring average, winning two tournaments. 

Sophomore Daniel Shofner was also an All-ASC and is ranked #9 in the nation by Golfstat. He has a 73.73 scoring average and holds the school record with 65 birdies this season. Shofner has five top six finishes this season. He was an Honorable Mention in 2022.

Freshman Tyler Durden was the ASC Freshman of the Year. He has a 74.59 scoring averaged with one tournament win and four top five finishes, including fifth place at the ASC Championship. Durden was also an Honorable Mention All-ASC selection.

Sophomore Cole Wiley was selected as the ASC Newcomer of the Year. He tied for third at the ASC Championship and has a 75.15 scoring average on the season.

Under first year head coach Cole Sondgeroth, the ASC Co-Coach of the Year, the Comets have set the school record with 306 birdies.

Pairings for the NCAA Championship will be announced Monday.
