GRANBURY, Texas - The #14 UT Dallas men's golf team begins the 2024 American Southwest Conference Championship at Nutcracker Golf Club Friday morning. The Comets will look to defend the title it won last year by 15 strokes - the second in program history.
UTD tees off the 54-hole, eight-team tournament at 9:24 a.m. Friday. The winner of the tournament will receive the ASC's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship in Boulder City, Nev. beginning May 14.
Under second-year head coach
Cole Sondgeroth, the Comets have placed in the top nine in every tournament, including wins at the UMHB Fall Invitational, the Lidlifter and Linda Lowery Invitational. They are ranked first in the West Region by Spikemark and have a scoring average of 289.19 with a school-record 509 birdies and 12 eagles.
The Comets will run out one of the deepest six-man lineups in the field. Senior All-American
Daniel Shofner has averaged 73.20 strokes per round with six top 10 finishes this season. Graduate student
Parker McCurdy is shooting 73.28 shots per 18 holes. He also has two top 10 finishes, has been named ASC Golfer of the Week twice and has tied the UTD school record with four eagles this season.
Sophomore
Tyler Durden is the reigning ASC Freshman of the Year and is shooting 73.25 this season with a team-high 11 rounds of par or better. Senior
Davis Archer, a two-time All-ASC selection, won the Texas Cup in March and tied for third at the Linda Lowery Invitational. He is averaging 73.71 shots per round.Â
Junior
Cole Wiley, last year's ASC Newcomer of the Year, tied for third at last year's championship. He leads UTD with a 72.89 average and three top five finishes in 2023-24. Junior
Andrew Chow was the medalist at last year's ASC Championship. This season, he is averaging 74 strokes per round and has made 68 birdies.
The Comets have two ASC titles in program history - 2003 and 2023.
