GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - UT Dallas sophomore
Frank Douglas broke the program's 5,000-meter record in the Comets' season-opening meet Saturday morning. Douglas finished 26th overall with a time of 15:39.8 , breaking Jorge Bormeo's mark set in 2005 by 19.1 seconds at the Gerald Richey UTA Invitational at Lynn Creek Park.
The UTD men finished fourth overall with 133 points behind three NCAA Division I programs - TCU (26), UTA (44) and Abilene Christian (66). The Comets were ahead of Texas A&M-Kingsville (153), Dallas Baptist (158), Nelson (226) and Texas Wesleyan (243).
Junior
Christopher Castro posted the third best 5K time in school history, coming in 35th place in 16:05.2. Matthew Chimiit (16:40.1),
Joseph Trevino (16:42.5),
Nicholas Holland (16:43.6),
Colton Dillard (16:44.5) and
Andy Hamze (16:46.1) finished in pack, claiming 41st through 45th places, respectively.
The Comet women finished in sixth with 176 points behind TCU (30), ACU (57), UTA (67), TAMUK (109) and DBU (120) and ahead of Nelson (211).
Senior
Rebeca Betanzo paced UTD with a 5K time of 20:31.9, placing 43rd. Sophomore
Ellie Suo-Anttila ran a personal best time of 20:39.1 for 45th place. Freshman
Bharvi Varu had a time of 20:47.50, placing 48th followed by
Sage Herrera (20:54.10/51st),
Emily Skrabanek (21:28/8/54th),
Abby Valdez (22:03.8/61st) and
Becki Jeffery (22:16.2/62nd).
Trevino, Holland and Euiael Aklile made their collegiate debut for the men. Varu,
Lorraine Martineau,
Bhavya Varu,
Juliana Vela and
Grace Youngblood ran for the first time for the Comet women.
UTD will run again on Friday, September 20 at the Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo.
