Reeling from a rough road loss two nights ago, the UT Dallas men's basketball team rebounded Thursday night with a 61-49 road win over Texas Lutheran in American Southwest Conference play.
After suffering an 80-74 loss at Schreiner Tuesday night, the Comets (now 8-2, 5-2 ASC) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Sophomore
Kyle Schleigh led the Comets with 16 points and 10 rebounds as UTD overcame shooting just 38 percent for the game.
Dmitriy Chernikov was the only other Comet to reach double figures, finishing the night with 13 points.
Schleigh scored four of the first five UTD points as Comets opened an 18-7 lead over the host Bulldogs just past the midway point of the opening half. Chernikov would spark UTD the rest of the first half, scoring eight of his 13 points before halftime. The Comets led TLU, 24-13, at the break after holding the Bulldogs to just 29 percent shooting in the half.
TLU (now 5-5, 4-3 ASC) climbed back in the game early in the second half, cutting the Comet lead down to five points, 26-21, with 16:11 remaining on a lay up by Jonathan Hamilton. UTD answered, though, with a a 7-0 run to extend the Comets' lead back to 12 points, 33-21, when
Carter Nash capped the run with an old-fashioned three-point play with 14:11 left.
The Bulldogs would not get back within single digits until less than seven minutes remaining, trimming UTD's lead to 40-31 with 6:47 left on a jumper by Evan Reed. TLU climbed within four points over the next two minutes but the Comets held off the late charge and ended the night with a late run to lock up the victory.
The Comets finished the night 19-of-50 from the floor, making 5-of-20 three-pointers (25%), and shot 72 percent (18-of-25) from the free-throw line. UTD finished the game with a 38-32 rebounding advantage.
TLU ended the game 20-of-54 (37%) from the field, going 4-of-13 (30.8%) from long range, and made 5-of-6 free throws. Isaac Wiliams had 11 points and Matthew Agonis had 10 points.
After a short break, the Comets will wrap up their four-game road swing Monday, Jan. 2, when they visit non-conference foe Austin College. Game time is 8 p.m. in Sherman.
