Box Score 2 MARSHALL, TX & CLINTON, MS (10.23-24.09) - The UT Dallas volleyball team clinched the American Southwest Conference East Division title Friday night, but it took a hard-fought, five-set victory over East Texas Baptist to do it. The 11th-ranked Comets then improved to 20-0 Saturday with a three-game sweep of Mississippi College.
The victories ran UTD's conference record to 15-0 and sent second-place ETBU to 12-4, assuring an outright East Division title for the Comets, who have won or shared the division crown for four straight seasons. UTD will host the ASC Championship Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7, regardless of what happens during the final week of the regular season. ETBU, with just one conference game remaining, is still assured of qualifying for the tournament.
UTD def. ETBU 11-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-17, 15-12 (boxscore)
The Comets had to rally after a miserable start to take the five-set victory. ETBU put the pressure squarely on the Comets after dominating in 11-25 and 19-25 victories in the first two sets. Facing the possibility of their first loss of the season, UTD rallied for a 25-18 and 25-17 wins in the middle sets, then claimed a dramatic 15-12 win in the fifth set to complete the comeback.
In the fifth and deciding set, UTD trailed ETBU 6-8 early, but went on a 5-1 run to take an 11-9 lead and finished out the match at 15-12.
The Comets rallied from a slow start just as they did at last year's ASC championship game against this same team. UTD had just 15 combined kills in the first two sets of the match, falling 25-11 and 25-19 before they got the ball rolling with 35 in the final three. Freshman
Dana Hilzendager and senior
Kyleigh Irish were the sparkplugs, combining for 29 kills and 25 digs as both finished with double-doubles.
ETBU did its part by not being able to sustain its early momentum in the match. The Lady Tigers, who were swept in three by UTD earlier this season in Richardson, hit .353 and .285 in their first two sets, but did not come close the rest of the way, commiting 22 attack errors in the final three sets.
UTD def. MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 25-14, 25-19, 25-18 (boxscore)
The Comets made quick work of Mississippi College Saturday to improve to 20-0, defeating the Lady Choctaws in three, 25-14, 25-19, 25-18.
UTD put down 40 kills over the three-set match, hitting .203. Irish again led the way with a double-double, tallying 14 kills and 12 digs to go along with three service aces.
Jessica Nassau hit .367 with 12 kills and just one error in 30 attacks.
Melanie Power had 20 digs and Calverley had 32 assists.
MC, meanwhile, hit just .089, putting down just 21 kills in three sets.
