RICHARDSON, TX (04.07.09) – The UT Dallas softball team just missed a chance to crawl out of the American Southwest Conference East Division cellar Tuesday, splitting a doubleheader with the University of the Ozarks.
UTD rallied twice in the first game to take an 11-8 win, but couldn't seem to come up with the key hit in the second game, and fell 7-4.
The split left both teams with identical 5-21 overall records, but Ozarks stayed ahead of the Comets in the ASC East standings with a 3-10 record while UTD slipped to 2-12.
Courtney Wright finished the day 7-for-8 at the plate and
Natalie Grinnell and
Heather Harydzak each had a four-hit afternoon.

to tie the score at 4-4. But Ozarks inched back out ahead with two runs in the 4th and two more in the 6th to lead 8-4 before the Comets erupted in the bottom of the inning. Ten batters came to the plate and pounded out six singles, bringing home seven runs to take the lead and pick up UTD's fifth win of the season.
In the second game, it was UTD that couldn't hold the lead. The Comets scored two in the 2nd with key two-out RBI hits from
Haley Starkey and
Kaci Hollingsworth; then added a solo home run from
Caysie Norum in the 3rd to go up 3-1. But UTD left the bases loaded and then saw Ozarks answer with a six-hit, four-run 4th inning to retake the lead. UTD got one back in the 5th when Starkey drove in
Courtney Wright, who led off the inning with a triple. But a play at the plate took the steam out of a bases loaded situation in the 6th and UTD went quietly in the final inning to fall 7-4.
