Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (11.15.11) - A school record went down and eleven different players scored as the UT Dallas women's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with a 60-41 home win over NAIA-foe Paul Quinn.
The Comets (now 1-0) blocked 13 shots as UTD opened a season with a win for the fourth straight year.
Ashley George tied the individual single-game mark with six blocks while
Brittany Houston had five rejections.
Lyndsey Smith and Kaitlyn Korioth each added a rejection as the Comets shattered the previous mark of eight blocked shots, set originally in 2005 and matched three times since.
Smith scored a team-high 14 points and Korioth added 11 points as the only Comets who reached double digits on the night.
Kellie Loukanis and
Ashley Shaw each came off the bench for eight points while Houston led UTD with 10 rebounds.
The Comets got off to a quick start scoring the first nine points of the game. UTD shot 40 percent from the floor (10-of-25) in the first 20 minutes as the Comets extended their lead to 15 points at the break, 28-13. Paul Quinn hit just 5-of-24 shots (20.8%) from the field in the opening half.
The Tigerettes (now 1-4) opened the second half on a short 4-2 advantage but UTD eventually extended its lead to as many as 24 points before setting for the 19-point win. Loukanis gave the Comets their first 20-point lead of the night with 12:55 left on a three-pointer, putting UTD up, 39-17. With 5:14 remaining, Korioth gave the Comets a 53-29 lead, their largest of the night, on a jumper after securing a rebound and driving the length of the court.
For Paul Quinn, Chaniese Turner led all scorers with 20 points while Thomesha Smith added 10 points. Domonique Mitchell grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds. The Tigerettes suited up just five players.
UTD returns to action Saturday afternoon as the Comets host Centenary to celebrate Homecoming. Game time is 1 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
