Lyndsey Smith had 21 points to lead three Comets in double figures as the UT Dallas women's basketball team picked up a 73-59 win over Centenary Saturday afternoon to celebrate Homecoming.
The Comets (now 2-0) shot nearly 59 percent (17-of-29) from the field and hit four three-pointers in the first half as UTD more than doubled Centenary, 43-21, over the opening 20 minutes of play. Despite UTD extending its lead to as many as 31 points in the second, the visiting Ladies (0-2) rallied late to draw within 12 late in the contest.
Smith was 9-of-16 from the field, hitting 3-of-5 shots from behind the arc, and added six rebounds and five assists.
Ashley George scored 17 points and Kaitlyn Korioth added 16 points to round out the Comets in double-digit scoring. George led UTD with seven rebounds and added four blocked shots. The Comets continue to be a shot-blocking machine, finishing the game with 10 blocks.
UTD opened the game on a 10-2 run and never looked back as the Comets shot 50 percent (29-of-58) from the field as a team. UT Dallas finished 5-of-10 (50%) from three-point range and shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free-throw line.
Centenary got a team-high 14 points from both Vashni Sharp-Moore and Megan Daniel while Jalena Sanders added 13 points. Sanders finished the game with a "double-double", adding a game-high 11 rebounds. The Ladies shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the field, hitting just 4-of-15 shots (26.7%) from three-point range, and shot 60 percent (9-of-15) from the charity stripe.
The Comets continue their three-game home start to start the season Tuesday night when they host Austin College. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
