Box Score SHERMAN, TX (01.02.12) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team shot 46 percent from the field and forced 17 turnovers as the Comets cruised to a 71-37 road win over non-conference foe Austin College Monday night.
Senior
Lyndsey Smith led four Comets in double digits as UTD improved to 10-1 on the season, matching the best 11-game start to a campaign in program history. Smith had 15 points while
Brittany Houston and
Ashley Shaw each scored 12 points and
Katie Korioth added 10 points.
The Comets scored the opening bucket and never looked back as they led wire-to-wire and improved to 4-0 in non-conference games this season. UTD took its first double-digit lead just over five minutes into the game, grabbing a 13-2 advantage on a Smith jumper with 14:48 left in the opening half. The Comets finished the half on 10-2 run to secure a 39-16 lead at intermission.
UTD opened the second half on a 10-0 run, capped by a layup by
Ashley George with 16:47 remaining to give the Comets a 49-16 lead. The Comets would lead by as many as 42 points before settling for the 34-point win, matching the program's largest margin of victory this season. UTD downed Sul Ross State, 72-38, on Nov. 28.
Smith finished the game 6-for-11 from the field, hitting 2-of-4 three-pointers, and went 1-for-2 from the foul line. She added five rebounds and four assists. Shaw ended the night with a game-high eight rebounds while Korioth also had a solid all-around performance with six rebounds and four assists.
The Comets shot 45.5 percent (30-of-66) from the floor, hitting just 4-of-17 three-pointers (23.5%), and hit just 7-of-16 shots (43.8%) from the free-throw line. UTD dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Lady Roos, 50-28.
UTD returns home Thursday night when the Comets host Concordia-Texas in an American Southwest Conference crossover game. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
