SHERMAN, TX (02.15.14) - The UT Dallas women's tennis opened up the new spring season Saturday morning with a 9-0 road win over Austin College.
The Comets (now 1-0) gave up just five games to sweep doubles play and needed just one extra set in singles action to complete the sweep of their regional rival. UTD will begin its defense of its American Southwest Conference title Friday afternoon at Howard Payne.
Leading 3-0 after doubles play, senior
Mindy Tiu made quick work of AC's Aardha Venkatachalam at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Junior
Casey Johnson then secured the team victory with a 6-3, 6-1, win over Lady Roo Sophie McDonald, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.
At No. 3 singles, senior
Cindy Tiu gave UTD a 6-0 cushion with a 6-0, 7-5, win over Kate Wilis, while senior
Jean-Jean Gwo finished soon after with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Cardye Lide at No. 5 singles. Sophomore
Auvi Tran then captured a 6-1, 6-3, win over Meghan White at No. 2 single before freshman
Katie Purdum completed the sweep with a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-3, 10-6, win at No. 6 over Anamaria Khevali.
Johnson and Tran teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over McDonald/White, the Tiu sisters cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Willis/Lide, and Gwo and Purdum easily handled Green/Khevali, 8-1, at No. 3.
