RICHARDSON, TX (04.09.16)- In its long-await home return, the UT Dallas women's tennis team suffered a pair of 5-4 loss to McMurry and Hardin-Simmons over the weekend.
The Comets (now 4-8, 3-1 ASC) had been away from home for more than a month before returning home for Friday's match with McMurry. UTD was then handed its first American Southwest Conference West Division loss of the season by HSU.
Against McMurry Friday, the Comets took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but managed just two singles victories against the WarHawks. Teammates
Sumvruta Iyengar and
Melanie Marlin earned a 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles while Comets
Sophie Farmer and
Elizabeth Labra won at No. 2, 8-2. Farmer won her singles match at No. 2, holding off McMurry's Bree Brosig, 6-2, 6-2.
Emily Nguyen then won at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Symphony Munoz.
In Saturday's match with HSU, the Comets trailed 2-1 after doubles played and then had two singles matches go to three sets. Iyengar and Marlin again picked up a doubles victory, winning 8-5 at No. 1. Farmer (No. 2, 6-1, 6-3), Marlin (No. 3, 6-3, 6-0) and Labra (No. 4, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5) all claimed singles wins. Top-flighted Iyengar dropped a tough 7-5, 7-5, decision at No. 1 singles to HSU's Shayne Cook.
The Comets return to action Friday when they square off with Sul Ross State in Abilene to close out the ASC slate.
