RICHARDSON, TX (02.12.17) - The UT Dallas women's tennis team was handed an 8-1 home loss to East Texas Baptist to open the Comets' 2017 spring season Saturday afternoon and then dropped a close 5-4 decision at Austin College Sunday.
The Comets (0-2) return to the courts on Wednesday, Feb. 22, when they face both Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Washington-St. Louis in San Antonio.
ETBU 8, UTD 1
The Comets kicked off the new year at home, but managed just a singles victory in an 8-1 loss to East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon.
UTD's lone win in the match came at No. 2 singles when
Sumvruta Iyengar swept Tiger Tiffany Stankiewicz, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Three Comets battled to three sets in singles play, including top-flighted
Kathy Joseph, who fell to ETBU's Kate Bramlett, 6-2, 1-6, 10-8.
Sophie Farmer (#3) and
Elizabeth Labra (#4) also dropped close three-set matches.
In doubles play, the duo of Joseph and Farmer nearly pulled off the win at No. 1, eventually falling to Bramlett/Kaleigh Smith, 9-7.
AC 5, UTD 4
The Comets looked to bounce back after a season-opening loss, but could not hold off an Austin College in a 5-4 defeat on the road.
UTD took 2-of-3 doubles matches to grab an early 2-1 lead, but watched the 'Roos rally with two quick wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to take the lead. Comet
Kathy Joseph then evened the match with a 6-1, 6-4, win over Kirsten Weber at No. 1 singles and
Simmone Spielman gave UTD a 4-3 lead with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Katie Seibert at No. 3. However, AC picked up three-set wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles to earn the win.
