ABILENE, TX (04.01.17) - The UT Dallas women's tennis team kicked off American Southwest Conference West Division play over the weekend, dropping a pair of games in Abilene.
The Comets (0-7, 0-2 ASC West) opened the trip with an 8-1 loss at McMurry Friday before falling to reigning divisional champion Hardin-Simmons, 5-4, Saturday.
At McMurry, UTD's lone win of the afternoon came at No. 1 doubles as
Sophie Farmer and
Elizabeth Labra teamed up for an 8-3 win over McM's Bree Brosig/Samantha Ritz. However, the Comets would drop the remaining two doubles matches and were swept in singles play.
In Saturday's loss, dropped all three doubles matches, but bounced back with wins at the top four singles positions to tighten the match. However, the host Cowgirls would earn straight set wins at both No. 5 and 6 singles to seal the victory.
Kathy Joseph held off Shayne Cook, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 1 while
Sumvruta Iyengar edged Jenna Smith 6-1, 6-7, 6-4, at No. 2.
Sophie Farmer earned a hard-fought 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, win at No. 3 over Michaela Ellison and
Elizabeth Labra handled Hannah Smith, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4.
