REDLANDS/CLAREMONT, CA (03.14.18) - The UT Dallas women's tennis squad dropped two matches against nationally ranked opponents Wednesday to wrap up the Comets' Spring Break road trip to California.
The Comets (5-2) begin a match with No. 34-ranked Redlands Tuesday and led 3-1 before the match was suspended due to rain. UTD returned to the courts on Wednesday at No. 3-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, falling 9-0, and then returned to Redlands to completed the suspended match. An exhausted UTD team would then fall to the Bulldogs, 5-4.
UTD returns to action on Thursday, March 29, when the Comets visit East Texas Baptist for a non-conference match.
MATCH 1 - REDLANDS 5, UTD 4
The Comets would take a 2-1 lead on Redlands after doubles play and picked up a quick singles win by
Kathy Joseph before the match was suspended due to rain on Tuesday. The two teams returned to the courts late Wednesday when the host Bulldogs would take 4-of-5 singles contests to earn the team victory, 5-4.
Sophie Farmer and
Elizabeth Labra claimed an 8-7 win at No. 2 while
Vivian Sepulveda and
Svaksha Iyengar earned an 8-3 win at No. 3 as the Comets were set up for an upset after doubles play. Joseph then dispatched UR's Elizabeth Johnson, 6-2, 6-0, for a 3-1 lead for the Comets before the suspension.
Upon resumption of play Wednesday, Iyengar completed her straight-set (6-3, 6-4) win over Redlands' Karen Kobayashi at No. 5 to give UTD a 4-1 lead, but the Bulldogs then claimed four three-set wins at the remaining singles matches to earn the victory.
MATCH 2 - CLAREMONT-MUDD-SCRIPPS 9, UTD 0
The No. 3-ranked Sagehens were too much for UTD on Wednesday as they stormed through doubles play and picked up four straight-set singles wins en route to a 9-0 win over the Comets.
No. 5 flighted Iyengar and No. 6
Elizabeth Labra were the only two Comets to battle to a third set in singles action before falling. Iyengar dropped a 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 contest to Lauren Yamagami, while Labra fell 6-7, 6-1, 10-7, to Juliette Martin.
