RICHARDSON, TX (04.22.18) - The UT Dallas women's tennis team collected its first-ever American Southwest Conference West Division title Sunday afternoon after an 8-1 win over Hardin-Simmons to close out the regular season.
The Comets (10-3, 6-0 ASC) will head into next weekend's ASC Tournament as the No. 1 seed from the West and will face East No. 4 seed Ozarks at 11:30 a.m. Thursday on the campus of Texas-Tyler.
After rolling through doubles play with three quick wins, giving up just six total games, the Comets closed out the victory with five straight set singles victories.
The tandem of
Vivian Sepulveda and
Svaksha Iyengar picked up the first win of the afternoon for UTD, blanking HSU's Kelsey Doege/Elizabeth Lopez, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles. Top-flighted
Kathy Joseph and
Sindhu Ravula followed up with an 8-2 win over Michaela Ellison/Abigail Kendall while the team of
Elizabeth Labra and
Sophie Farmer completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Kyra Mobley/Maddie Hammond at No. 2.
Joseph lifted the Comets to a 4-0 lead as she was the first Comet to close out her singles win, easily handling Mobley, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2. Ravula added a 6-1, 6-1, win of her own at No. 3 over Hammond to secure the UTD team win.
Sumvruta Iyengar (No. 1, 6-2, 6-1),
Svaksha Iyengar (No. 4, 6-2, 6-2) and Labra (No. 5, 6-2, 6-2) added singles wins.
