Box Score LONGVIEW, TX (02.04.21) - The No. 10-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team returned to the hardwood for the first time in more than two weeks Thursday night and earned a 67-62 road win over LeTourneau in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets (now 8-2, 4-1 ASC) had not played since a 62-51 home over LETU on Jan. 16, missing two full weeks due to COVID-19 protocol. UTD stormed out for an early lead over the host the YellowJackets, holding a 12-point advantage at halftime, but needed late defense and free throws to collect the victory and remain in the ASC East race.
Thanks to a decisive second period, the Comets secured a 32-20 cushion at the break. However, the YellowJackets (9-3, 5-2 ASC) would cut the deficit to just seven points after the third quarter and even took a two-point lead, 54-52, midway through the fourth.
Kelley Skinner, who finished the night with a game-high 20 points, knotted the game on the Comets' next possession to spark a 5-0 UTD run, which allowed the Comets to pull away just enough to hold off multiple LETU late surges.Â
The YellowJackets drew back within a point twice down the stretch, the last coming with 2:21 remaining at 59-58, before UTD rolled off seven straight points to seal the victory. The Comets forced two LETU turnovers in the final two minutes and held the YellowJackets to just one field goal during that same stretch.
Skinner was 6-for-10 from the field and 6-for-6 from the foul line for her second 20-point game of the season while adding seven rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Comets.
Raenett Hughes added 13 points and a team-best eight rebounds,
Kaitlyn Judge had 11 points and
Asia Mitchell came off the bench for 10 points.
Next up for the Comets is a battle of top 10 programs as they visit No. 3-ranked East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is 1 p.m. in Marshall.
