Coach Shewmake Steps Down from UTD After 24 Seasons

RICHARDSON, Texas – After 24 seasons, Shane Shewmake is stepping down as the head baseball coach at UT Dallas.

The only coach in the program's history, Shewmake compiled a 650-370 record while never having a losing season. His squads collected at least 20 victories each season, with the exception of the COVID-19 shortened 2020 campaign. Shewmake led the Comets to back-to-back 30-win seasons and American Southwest Conference titles in 2021 and 2022. The Comets also won the ASC crown in 2018. He is a three-time ASC Coach of the Year (2004, 2012, 2017) and went 319-182 in league play.

Shewmake's career at UTD ended on a high note as the Comets posted a program-best .842 winning percentage, going 32-6 in 2025.

"It has been an honor serving UTD, the athletic department and the baseball program for 24 years," Shewmake said. "From starting the program in 2001, to making the transition to Division II, a lot of great changes have happened over the years. I would like to thank all of the administrators, staff, assistant coaches and players who have made this a memorable 24 years."

Over his 24 years, Shewmake mentored nine All-Americans, 39 All-Region selections, 118 All-ASC honorees and six inductees to the UT Dallas Athletics Hall of Honors. His squads qualified for the ASC Championship Tournament 20 times, advancing to nine title games, and made four trips to the NCAA Division III National Tournament (2007, 2018, 2021, 2022).

"Shane's retirement from UTD marks the end of an era, as he is the only head coach this program has known," said UTD Director of Athletics Angela Marin. "He leaves with an impressive 650 wins, but it will be the impact he had on his student athletes that has been invaluable to this program. I would like to personally thank him for his leadership, unwavering commitment and dedication to UTD athletics. We wish him the very best!"

The search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
