RICHARDSON, TX (03.04.09) – The UT Dallas baseball team pulled off one if its patented late-game rallies to take the lead against nationally-ranked Adrian College Wednesday afternoon, but let the No. 3-ranked Bulldogs tie the score in the 9th inning, then win 9-8 in extra innings.
UTD (now 6-8) had rallied to overcome a 5-1 deficit with four runs in the 7th inning, and led 7-5 going into the 9th with closer
Adam Spinn on the mound. But the UTD defense let Spinn down, committing a pair of errors in the inning that allowed Adrian to tie the score. Then in the 10th innning, Spinn (1-1) gave up two RBI singles with two outs that gave Bulldogs a 9-7 lead. The Comets got one back in the bottom of the 9th after back-to-back hits from
Cody Ross and
Jared Smith, but a double-play and strikeout ended the threat one run short.
UTD struck first with a run in the first off a double steal, but trailed 4-1 in the 3rd after a five-hit inning by the Bulldogs. Adrian touched the UTD pitchers (eight were used on the afternoon) for another run in the 5th to go up 5-1. The Comets got one run back in the 6th on an leadoff single from
Chris Biguenet, who scored on a groundout, then erupted for four in the 7th. The first three hitters walked, then
Jake Eisman delivered a clutch triple to clear the bases and
Garret Norton drove in another run with a single. The Comets added another run in the 8th off a Smith solo homerun.
Ross had his way with the Adrian pitching, leading the Comets with a 4-for-5 afternoon. Smith finished 3-for-5.
