GORDON WALTERS
BASEBALL 2002-2005
GORDON WALTERS was a solid pitcher for the UTD baseball team during the program’s first four seasons in 2002-2005, showing a high level of endurance, consistency and effectiveness that has rarely been duplicated since.
As one of the original members of the UTD baseball program, Walters went on to pitch in 41 games, making 31 starts and recording almost 200 innings of work for the Comets over the next four years.
Most notably, Walters’ earned run average was 2.87 or better in three of those four seasons. He held opposing batters to a career batting average of just .223, and struck out 194 hitters – both UTD school records. In four years, Gordon pitched 197.2 innings and won a program-best 18 games for teams that finished with a combined 103-63 record and appeared in three American Southwest Conference championship tournaments during his career.
Walters consistently averaged almost one strikeout for every inning he worked over four years, and struck out almost three batters for every one that he walked.
Walters won honorable mention All-American Southwest Conference recognition in his final two seasons and was consistently a member of the ASC Academic All-Conference team.
Originally from West Columbia, Texas, Walters earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from UTD and received his CPA license in 2008. He worked as an accountant for three years with KMPG, LLC before joining Atmos Energy Corporation in 2010. He is married to former UTD women’s soccer player Theresa Buckles and lives in McKinney, Texas.
